Brasstown Bald, Elev. 4784 ft

Completed 4/10/04 - #8
(start at #1)

After taking a hiatus from highpointing over the winter (living in Texas, we're a bit averse to the cold) we were ready for a whirlwind weekend of conquering summits.  We flew to Atlanta and drove up to Helen, GA to spend the night.  Helen reminded us a lot of Gatlinburg, TN - tourist trap hell, pretty much.  Saturday morning we drove up to Brasstown Bald.

Because taking the shuttle bus from the parking lot to the summit wouldn't feel much like "conquering" anything, we hiked up the 1/2 mile paved trail instead.

Not bad for a season-long hiatus.  But right before we started hiking, we made a terrible discovery.  WE HAD FORGOTTEN DRISKILL!!!  We were heartbroken that our mascot wouldn't be with us for our next 3 highpoints. :-(

There is a visitor's center at the summit with a theater and information on the history and geology of the mountain.  We saw the 50 Flags Over America Highpointers poster on display in the lobby and talked to the ranger about it a bit.  She let us in behind the locked gate to see the USGS marker.  Apparently it's locked to keep people from falling down those particular stairs.

There were some nice views from the summit...we could barely make out Clingman's Dome in TN.

With clouds starting to roll in we decided to head on to #2 for the day, South Carolina's Sassafras Mountain.

On to the next highpoint
